The Shore

Now that Obama has solved race in America I feel it is safe for me to take a little break. Off to Up North as we say here for a week to fish the Manistee and walk on warm sand. I’m going to let readers in on a rare secret: Michigan has a half dozen of the best beaches in the States. When we talk about going to the shore we don’t mean the ocean. With far over 3,000 miles of lake front to choose from we have more beach than Florida.
Now granted some of it is Lake Superior. What the grizzly is to bears Superior is to lakes. A vast, deep northern freshwater with glacier swept escarpments among its many features Superior is extraordinary. I wouldn’t recommend swimming in those frigid waters even at the height of summer though. Lake Erie is really just a large pond. The puddle of The Great Lakes. It looks and a smells like a big open latrine. And the Huron smells like all of the runoff from the chemicals Dow has been dumping for years so I wouldn’t recommend them either. Lake Michigan on the other hand has remarkable beaches and dunes- miles and miles of them.
I have a backpack full of books; even a novel or two and plan on some lazy days. Finally reading Christopher Hill’s work on the Levellers and friends. I don’t know about internet access, but if there is I’ll post pictures. Comments will be held until I return or can get to them. I’ll be back in a week or so. A parting shout out to Korea’s heroic Ssangyong workers!

I LOVE your line about Lake Superior and grizzly bears. That rings so true to me, knowing the lake well and bears a bit. Enjoy your vacation!
