Well, just when you thought it might be over……McCain wrapped it up last night. Bill and Hillary’s machine is in full gear. Obama, who would be like having Bono for President, now seems wounded.
It may very well go to the convention in the summer. This is highly unusual. Ted Kennedy fought all the way into the convention against Carter in 1980 and it crippled the Dems in the run up to the election. Of course they were facing Reagan in 1980.
McCain is no Reagan. His speeches sound like he’s acting in a high school play.
And Nader has chosen Matt Gonzalez of the San Francisco Greens as a running mate, which will half the median age of the ticket.
If Hillary gets in then the space opens up for Nader or another candidate to the left. Especially if the Clinton machine pulls out the knives on the Obama campaign. Race and gender will continue to be the subtext of the race, with potentially damaging consequences for the Dems in November. It’s theirs to lose…..so was 2000 and 2004.
But Obama is hardly out of it. Indeed, he probably will have the delegates to win if a back room deal doesn’t change his numbers. Obama is not on the left; even a little. He seems to have made a career out of having very little politics of substance at all.
This impossibly long campaign is going through November without a pause. I already need a break.
