Received this from the Michigan Welfare Rights Association. This is an important battle. It’s winter so warm bodies are needed to huddle together in solidarity against the bosses one-sided class war and the Michigan winter. Hope to see you on the picket line!
MWRO Members and Friends, As you've heard, 3600 of our UAW brothers and sisters at American Axle and Manufacturing went on strike last Tuesday. A few of us joined them on the picket line in Hamtramck on Monday night in solidarity and to learn more about their struggle. The company is demanding wage cuts up to $14/hr, increased co-pays and cuts in health care. The union has charged the company with "unfair labor practices." Meanwhile, workers are holding strong on the line, despite the bad weather, while efforts are made to resume negotiations. Like so many others battles for decent jobs, their fight is our fight! If they lose, more of them will end up in our "poor people's union" instead of earning living wages to support their families and our communities. Beginning Tuesday, March 4, Michigan Welfare Rights will participate in solidarity pickets at American Axle. Each Tuesday from 5-6pm (until the strike ends), MWRO will gather at American Axle on Holbrook near UAW Local 235 (2140 Holbrook)--snow, sleet, rain or shine. Please join us for one hour and/or make a donation to the Local. In addition to the community's support, picketers need the following items: easy to eat foods such as chili, soup, oyster/soup crackers, sandwich fixins, hot dogs, hot chocolate; and hot beverage cups. Donations of any kind can be taken or mailed to: UAW Local 235, 2140 Holbrook Ave, Hamtramck, MI 48212. Watch MWRO's "Ask Welfare Rights" Show on WHPR from 7-8pm on Tuesdays (TV 33 UHF, Comcast 20, 88.1FM) for picket line updates. Call MWRO for more info (313) 964-0618
