Most of the news from the European elections was bad. All I have to say is British National Party and Sarkozy and you get the picture. One bright spot, along with the breakthrough of the Left Bloc in Portugal, was the victory of Socialist Party candidate Joe Higgins for Dublin. Joe seemed to come from nowhere to win, only showing up in the polls a few weeks ago. With over 50,000 first preference votes it was well deserved. The SP also won 5 council seats in the local elections twice topping the vote. Joe recently lost his seat in the Dail and one hopes that this win might help him regain it.
