So much for a “new beginning” with Latin America. The leader of The Empire has today renewed the embargo on Cuba for another year, it being deemed in the “national interest” according to his two sentence press release. National interest? Not my interests surely, or yours, or anyone I know. Hmm, who must he mean? It couldn’t mean all of those capitalists whose ill-gotten gains were returned to the Cuban people after a couple of centuries of imperial robbery thanks to their revolution, could it?
After all those are only business interests. But that must be the nation he means because, as the last six months have made clear, that’s who he has been doing his best to defend since he got in office. Banking bandits, pharmaceutical fat cats, health insurance mobsters, failed auto execs and whoever makes unmanned drones to blow up wedding parties in Afghanistan seem to be doing best under the Obama administration. While here in Michigan we might as well have an embargo on us with 15% official unemployment (really 20 percent?), not a train to catch, crumbling cities and not just the old folks collecting cans for food. Thanks for protecting the national interest Obama. Now how about some national health care- oh wait, that’s not in the interests of capital. Hmmm, could it be that we have competing interests in conflict with one another with the government taking sides? Oh! perish the thought!
The media is hand ringing the growing lack of decorum, at least that’s the story they’re selling, in this country with Kanye, Wilson and Serena on an unending cable news loop. Any public acknowledgement of our competing interests might coarsen our already dangerously overheated public discourse, put Ken Burns out of a job and make all future dinner parties potentially uncomfortable. Soon we might even be heckling the President! No, we can’t allow that. We are one nation after all, at least as long as we still have NPR. Shhh, don’t mention the (class) war, decorum dictates it.
