We’re getting towards the end of the year when folks do the “best of” lists. I’m not sure about these things. My favorite things are usually what I’m into at the moment. I have nothing but favorites. I saw a lot of good shows the last twelve months, but I can say with certainty that the best music I saw this year was Will Oldham, Emmett Kelly, Cheyenne Mize, Josh Abram and the incomparable Jim White on drums doing the Bonnie Prince around the Midwest. Each night I saw them was different and it wasn’t just in the set list (Will’s catalog is prodigious). I’ve seen Will for fifteen years now, solo and with bands, and this tour beat them all. Will always plays with interesting musicians, but this group really clicked. Every night I saw them they played together. Not just any band can rise to meet Jim White’s challenge. Here they are doing the great Sally Timms, Jon Langford tune Horses in Turin and Will’s own Cursed Sleep in Cleveland (the sound on such videos does the music no justice). I want a bootleg of this tour. Every show and in sequence.
