Whoever was going to end up forming the next British government was going to preside over severe austerity and continuing war (something of a theme these days). It looks like Conservative Eton boy ‘Dave’ Cameron as Prime Minister in coalition with banker’s son Nick Clegg of the Liberals is going to be given the task. However, what Thatcher started New Labour finished; there will be no National Union of Mineworkers to stand in the way. New Labour as opposition isn’t very promising, as the contest will be between Blairites and Brownites for leadership after Gordon Brown’s defeat. Bleak.
I’ve never really understood the Liberal Democrats, especially after New Labour. Folks talk about the plethora of socialist parties out there, but how many neo-liberal capitalist parties are really necessary? Sadly, this deal will preclude the possibility of the Democratic Unionist Party and their 8 MPs from playing a role in a British coalition government. And with them goes any possibility of humor (barring an inevitable Tory cross-dressing scandal) in the new regime.
Interesting side note: Clegg’s maternal grandmother, Kira von Engelhardt, was a Russian Baroness that fled the Revolution after 1917 along with the rest of her parasitic class. While we will hope in vain that the workers of Britain will repeat the success of their Russian counterparts in booting out a ruling class Clegg all of those years ago, we will however be asking the Newtown Neurotics to re-record their classic with the, admittedly less catchy, title ‘Kick Out The Tory-Liberal-Dems!”
